Riot suspends Resurgence Valorant roster for match-fixing

Riot Games has officially suspended the Resurgence Valorant roster after concluding a match-fixing investigation. The developers determined the team “manipulated the outcome” of a professional match and suspended two players from Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) for 36 months.

After match-fixing allegations surrounding a match between Resurgence and Blackbird during the Valorant Ignition Series surfaced, Riot launched an investigation. Riot discovered Resurgence players Malcolm “germsg” Chung and Ryan “Dreamycsgo” Tan “coordinated to bet against their own team.”

Germsg came up with the idea, and Dreamycsgo provided the capital for the bet. They let their teammates know about the scheme, and the rest of the roster did not want to throw the match against Blackbird. They did not report the scheme and concealed it from their management and Valorant Esports officials, however.

After losing the match 2-0, Germsg attempted to pay off the rest of the roster, who refused. As a result, the team disbanded the following month. Germsg and Dreamycsgo violated Rule 7.2.1 and 7.2.4 of the Valorant Global Competition Policy.

Suspensions and bans

Riot Games banned Germsg and Dreamycsgo from VCT for 36 months. The ban started on April 22, 2021, and they can return to Valorant in April 2024. The rest of the Resurgence roster received bans based on their “culpability and their cooperation” during the investigation.

Riot banned Justin “Boplek” Wong Chong Cheng and Sengdala “Jabtheboy” Jamnalong from VCT for one year. Riot also banned Du Min “Mortdecai” Yeo and Benedict “Benaf” Tan from VCT for six months. Mortdecai and Benaf can return to VCT in October 2021. However, Boplek and Jabtheboy can return in April 2022.

“Maintaining the competitive integrity of our tournaments is our top priority and we take such matters extremely seriously,” Riot said. “All players are expected to abide by the rules of fair play, agreed upon prior to participation in the tournaments. Violations of the rules of fair play will not be tolerated by VALORANT Esports.”
