Day 4 of the Allied Esports Odyssey tourney saw the penultimate matches played out as the group stage is nearing its end. On day 4 we saw FunPlus Phoenix take on BBL Esports, G2 go head-to-head with Vodafone Giants, and Team Liquid battle Ninjas in Pyjamas (NiP).
Allied Esports Odyssey group stage follows a best-of-two format with each team facing each other once. Top four teams out of six advance to the playoff stage.
The new FunPlus Phoenix roster took on the so-far lackluster BBL squad. With a 0-0-3 score, BBL had to win the following four maps to even have a chance of advancing. Unfortunately for them, FunPlus Phoenix came up big. They took Bind with relative ease 13:7. Afterwards, they simply stole Haven with an easy as butter 13:2 scoreline. BBL don’t stand a chance of advancing to the playoffs as they have lost all of their matches.
Being the favorite of the tournament, G2 came into this match up looking shaky. Vodafone Giants capitalized on G2’s sloppy form and took Ascent 13:9. Haven also almost slipped out of G2’s hands as an overtime ensued. On top of that, the overtime went all the way to 18:16, when G2 finally made the stride to split the maps and end in a draw. The drop in form may be related to the unfortunate family emergency of David “Davidp” Prins. We send our utmost condolences to David and his family.
The final match of the day saw the newly established Team Liquid take on NiP. The first map brought the two teams to Haven, where both sides showed a strong attacking side. However, it was Team Liquid’s initial 10:2 lead that gave them an extra edge. NiP got close, but not close enough as it went 13:10 for Liquid. Bind was then the last map of the day. Team Liquid went on to have a ravaging lead on the defensive side, getting in a hefty lead at 9:3. NiP, however, quickly recomposed and attempted to mount a comeback on their defense. Despite rhyme and his fantastic Cypher plays, NiP were unable to catch up, losing the map 13:8 in the end.
After the penultimate day of the group stage of Allied Esports Odyssey, the group stage table looks as follows:
